Columbia Beach, Gem of the Bay

Columbia Beach is one of several communities located in Shady Side, a peninsula roughly 20 miles south of Annapolis and 30 miles from each Washington, DC, and Baltimore. Bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the West River, Shady Side has long been a home to working watermen and a peaceful retreat for waterside recreation and relaxation.

With a proud history that dates back to the 1940s, the historically African American community today is a diverse community with a mix of year-round and weekend/vacation homes. Columbia Beach is a private community providing recreational opportunities exclusively for its residents and their guests.

Situated on the Chesapeake Bay side of the Shady Side peninsula, Columbia Beach enjoys spectacular views in all directions. The main street parallels a Bay cove that attracts waterfowl in all seasons, including blue herons, ospreys, ducks, geese, and tundra swans. Flagg Pond, a wildlife sanctuary, borders Columbia Beach to the west.

The Columbia Beach Citizens Improvement Association (CBCIA) manages the community’s responsibilities as a Special Community Benefit District and an Erosion Control District
